Bed Bugs—These insects also feed on blood and typically at night. Their bites can result in rashes or skin irritation, as well as allergic symptoms. As their name suggests, they are commonly found in beds, but they can also gather elsewhere, like in clothing, luggage, and couches or other furniture. Bed bugs are very small and their bodies are oval and brown in color, though they can turn more reddish after they feed. These pests are annoying and not wanted in the places humans sleep.

Stings by these pests are a major cause of morbidity and mortality—they account for more fatalities than any other venomous animal in the United States. You do not want an infestation of these pests. Cockroaches - These insects are incredibly resilient and are adapted to survive. If you have an infestation of roaches, it is more of an inconvenience than a danger, though they can cause allergies and trigger asthma attacks, especially with young children. Silverfish are wingless insects and they don’t bite or sting, so they don’t pose a direct threat to humans. However, it is still in your best interest to get rid of them so you protect your valuable property, like books, documents, photographs, and clothing.

Spiders have two main body parts, eight legs, and two pincers, which are venomous. They are among the most feared pests because several species exist that could be harmful or even deadly to humans. Centipedes - The important thing to know about centipedes is that they are considered toxic, but they don’t typically pose any significant threat to humans. It is rare for them to bite people and there shouldn’t be any lasting harm from the bite if it does occur. Centipedes are very flexible and fast and their distinguishing characteristic is their legs, which is not actually 100, but instead can vary from 15 and 177 pairs of legs if it’s a fully developed adult. They don’t tend to grow more than 2 inches long, but some can reach one foot in length. They do eat other bugs, which can be beneficial, but most people understandably still don’t want them in their homes.

Fruit Flies—These insects often infest homes that have fruit sitting out, whether ripe or rotting. Fruit flies, as their name suggests, are attracted to fruit, though they also enjoy fermented substances like beer and wine. An infestation can develop in the kitchen or the trash can. These pests are difficult to control, as the females can lay about 500 eggs at a time and they hatch almost immediately at less than 2 days. Fruit flies are a nuisance, but they can also contaminate food by spreading bacteria.

Springtails: Springtails are very small insects, often found in areas with a high level of moisture. They do not bite or sting, so they pose no danger to humans. They won't damage your clothes, furniture, or food, as they typically feed on fungi and decaying roots. They won't even damage plants. Still, they can be unpleasant nuisances to have in your home. Thankfully, springtails are generally a temporary problem and will die off when moisture levels are reduced.

Indian Meal Moth - This is a common household pest that feeds primarily on stored food products. They have many stages, from eggs to larva to pupa, but if you see an adult Indian Meal Moth in your home, that is usually a sign of infestation. You can bet there are many more you don’t see, hiding out of sight and trying to break into your food stores. Most of the damage is actually done by the larva as they are surface feeders, but adults will continue to reproduce until you put an end to the infestation to stop their population from growing.

Earwigs—These insects sound unpleasant, but are mostly harmless. They do not lay eggs in human ears and they certainly don’t crawl into your brain to eat it. They do not have stingers or venom, so they do not pose a danger to humans. Earwigs have six legs, two antennae, three body sections, and a set of pincers towards the end of their abdomens. They are small, ranging from 5 to 25 millimeters in size. They are mostly frustrating pests because of the damage they can do to gardens, flowerbeds, and homes.

A boxelder bug is called that because it is often found on or near boxelder trees. They are black with reddish markings and six legs. They can become a nuisance as the weather changes from winter to spring and they start to invade sheds, garages, and homes. They do not pose a danger to humans and don’t tend to bite. If you do get bitten by this bug, it wouldn’t affect you more than a small mosquito bite. They can produce strong, unpleasant odors, making them mostly a nuisance bug.

Millipedes—Like the centipede, this insect also has many legs, but typically more than its counterpart. The number of legs generally ranges from 40 to 400 pairs, though few people want to get close enough to count them all. Thankfully, millipedes are not poisonous, though many species have glands that can produce fluids that may cause irritation or allergic reactions in some people. Their defensive spray can cause discoloration in the skin.

Rodents—Rodents include a variety of mammals, but mostly rats and mice. These animals tend to be a problem, especially during the winter. As they seek out an escape from the cold, they might find their way into your home. These are generally docile creatures, but can get defensive when cornered and will bite, which can cause a number of problems, as rats and mice are known to spread many different diseases. You can also catch these diseases by touching the rodents or coming into contact with their urine, feces, or saliva. Fleas—Fleas are also insects, and like ticks, they feed off the blood of their host. You are more likely get a flea infestation if you have pets who are more susceptible since they spend more time outside. There are over 2,500 species of this small, flightless insect. They are unpleasant parasites and can affect humans by causing itching and irritation, and also spreading potentially dangerous diseases. Definitely do not hesitate to call the professionals if you think you might have a flea infestation in your home.

Deer Ticks—These tiny ticks have black legs and feed off the blood of large animals, including deer, as its name suggests. However, they will also bite humans. It is difficult to know if you’ve been bitten by a deer tick or if you have them in your home, as they are incredibly tiny—no bigger than the point of a pencil. They tend to be found in hidden parts of the body, such as the armpit or groin. Unfortunately, they can spread bacteria that can potentially cause diseases like Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Exterminate these pests if they’re in your home.

Termites—These subterranean insects feed on wood, so they are a common pest in homes—and serious ones. They can cause significant structural damage and usually aren’t noticed until that damage has already occurred. Termites live in colonies, and though they may bite or sting, the wounds are not toxic and likely would not even be felt. They are not known to carry any diseases to humans, so they are generally not dangerous to our health. However, they may contribute to someone having an allergic reaction or asthma attack, though it would be rare.

Asian Beetles—These insects are basically large lady beetles or ladybugs. Their coloration can vary from shades of red and orange and they may or may not have spots. These bugs can bite, but are not generally harmful to humans or animals. They are mostly just a nuisance if they find their way into your home, as they can leave droppings behind and secrete unpleasant odors or fluids. Mostly, however, they stay outside and feed on other plant pests.

Carpenter Ants—These large ants build nests inside wood, though they do not feed on the wood like termites do. They are attracted to areas where condensation might collect, so check your windows, doorways, bathrooms, kitchens, drains vents, and laundry areas for possible signs of this insect’s presence. Ants are part of large colonies, so an infestation could involve hundreds, if not thousands of these insects in your home. They usually don’t bite and pose no threat to humans, but your home is a different story. They build tunnels in wood and can cause serious damage.
